Top tips for a healthy smile

Keep the dentist at bay and get an A-list smile with this expert advice...

If you break the bank on anti-ageing lotions and potions, hair products and make-up you should be aware that it’s your teeth which may actually reveal your true age. Here are some of the issues you never knew revealed your age (and how to prevent them):

Tooth enamel can erode over time and lead to sensitivity. That glass of orange juice, wine or gin and tonic may well be the culprit of your enamel erosion. Acidic food and drink, including wine, tonic water, fruit juices and sports drinks can soften the enamel of your teeth.

Top tip: To avoid wearing down your tooth enamel, drink through a straw and wait an hour after consuming acidic food or drink before brushing your teeth. Use a toothpaste and oral rinse which protects teeth and gums by eliminating bacteria and plaque and by creating a protective enamel shield.

Chipped or cracked teeth are a sure giveaway of a life well lived.

Top tip: To avoid flaws/cracks on the surface of your teeth avoid chewing ice or any very hard foods. You should also steer clear of eating or drinking very hot and very cold foods at the same time. If your teeth are already showing signs of wear and tear, visit your dentist and follow a good oral hygiene routine. Try a sensitive toothpaste which helps to rebuild tooth surfaces and fill in the microscopic enamel cracks to leave teeth stronger, smoother and brighter.

Another more obvious assault on teeth is staining. Some of the worst perpetrators for stained teeth are coffee, tea, wine, berries, fruit juice, cola, soy sauce and curry.

Top tip: After consuming beverages that stain teeth, it is advised to have a drink of water. Follow a good oral hygiene routine. Another trick to keep those pearly teeth sparkling white is to consume high-risk drinks through a straw.

As you get older, through inadequate brushing and flossing, hormonal changes and grinding, your gums may recede and become inflamed.

Top tip: The best way to prevent gum recession is to take good care of your mouth. Avoid vigorously scrubbing your teeth back and forth. Brush in a gentle circular motion at a 45° angle twice a day, floss and rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash.

Nothing’s worse than a gaping hole in your smile for adding years to your appearance.

Top tip: The best way to avoid a toothless smile, gum problems and tooth decay is to visit the dentist regularly and maintain a comprehensive oral hygiene routine.

Leading dentist Mervyn Druian says: “A good dental regime and using the right products, is key to age protect your mouth, and keep your smile looking young and healthy.” Keep looking youthful - and be smile with confidence!
