We look back at the European Freeski Open

The European Freeski Open, a slopestyle contest, is one of the most exciting freestyle events in Europe.

Three freeski generations stood on the ladies podium last Saturday for the European Freeski Open in Laax, Switzerland, proving that age really is just a number. 14-year-old Kelly Sildaru took the top spot with US rider Keri Herman, 33, taking second and 2011 EFO winner Emma Dahlström from Sweden, 23, coming in at third.

This year's freestyle skiing competition marked its ninth year and hundreds of spectators turned out to watch the final. Estonian Kelly Sildaru laid down a huge run setting the bar extremely high for the remaining contestants. Having picked up the slopestyle gold medal at the prestigious X Games earlier this winter, she was yet again victorious in the Swiss alps. Tricks such as the back to back 9 combination on the kickers won over the judges, who awarded her with an incredible 95.16 points. 'I'm very happy to be in Laax and super stoked about my high score,' she said.

For the men it was American Gus Kenworthy, 24, who pipped the post and claimed first place after a massive final run. Despite thick fog and poor visibility disrupting the contest's mid-finals, Gus impressed the judges with a massive hit on the final quarter-pipe, earning him a whopping 92.50 points and relegating Norwegian Felix Usterud and Great Britain’s own James Woods to second and third place respectively.

With deep roots in the freestyle scene and a huge background and passion for the sport, Laax is the ideal home for a competition of this calibre, whose open format allows newcomers to pitch themselves against the sport’s elite. A resort one and a half hours south of Zurich, it’s infamous for its snow park which includes the largest half-pipe in the world.
