Depression, Substance Abuse Disorders May Raise Men's Heart Disease Risk Mental conditions -- ranging from schizophrenia to substance abuse disorders -- could raise men's risk of heart disease, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh, the University of Southampton and the Karolinska Institute found that the risk of heart disease was higher among men diagnosed with a mental disorder at age 18, as well as men who eventually were hospitalized because of a psychiatric disorder later on in life.
