The Paris-based International Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has chosen Kazakhstan to host the Expo 2017. Kazakhstan had chosen future energy as the theme. The only other contender was the Belgian city of Liege. Astana gained 103 votes against 44 for Liege during a meeting of the BIE, which has 161 member states.
